Personal Counselling/Psychotherapy
Location: Crowborough
Course Fee: £50
There are many reasons why people seek the support of a counsellor or psychotherapist. Stress is a major factor in 21st century society; people struggle with difficult decisions, go through bereavements and relationship problems, get stuck in unhelpful patterns, suffer depression or anxiety, have low self esteem, lack confidence or just generally feel unhappy with life.
Individual counselling and psychotherapy involves meeting regularly (usually weekly) with a qualified and trusted professional who will listen, support and challenge in order to help clients work through their individual issues.
Often people want to use their therapy to make adjustments that help improve their life. These adjustments might involve taking a fresh approach to an ongoing problem, reviewing and experimenting with new ways of behaving, or looking at personal history and making links with how this influences their life today. Clients can then address and decide what they might want to change.
Through these sessions people learn more about who they are and why they behave in certain ways. This knowledge can help them improve their self-esteem and confidence.
The important thing is this: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become.Charles DuBois
The Process
Anyone seeking counselling should have an initial session with a therapist to discuss the client's issues and what they hope to achieve. This meeting provides the opportunity for both client and counsellor to decide if they are compatible.
Having chosen to proceed, early sessions will be focused on building a safe and trusting relationship with some further exploration of the client's issues. The focus later moves on to working towards whatever the client wishes to achieve from counselling.
The final phase of therapy will be about ending the relationship in a psychologically healthy way and planning for the future.
Setting Up An Initial Session
Maybe the hardest part of the counselling process is making that first appointment. Sometimes it's difficult to reach out and ask for help; often people put up with feeling unhappy. Having made that initial step and found themselves in a safe, confidential environment the client will usually feel much better and enjoy taking the time just for themselves.
