Introduction to Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (Online) – September

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a mindfulness-based behavioural model of psychotherapy that has two major goals:

• To encourage and support people in accepting unwanted thoughts and feelings that they have no control over

• To identify what’s important in life and take action towards these values

Over 4, three-hour sessions will we learn:

– The six core principles of ACT, and how to adapt them to different clinical populations

– An understanding of how we learn, and how to apply this to clinical practice

– A new perspective on how to assess unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviours

– Practical tools to develop and strengthen psychological acceptance

– Powerful ways to rapidly reduce the believability of negative thoughts (without challenging them)

– How to fundamentally change your relationship with unwanted thoughts and feelings

– How to help clients connect with their core values, and take committed action

– Effective goal setting

– How to use mindfulness in a flexible, formulation-informed manner that doesn’t always rely on meditation.

– How to effectively utilise ACT in a wide variety of clinical problems, alongside your practice

– How to effectively use interventions based on metaphor, paradox and experiential exercises

– How to apply ACT in your own life, to create a sense of vitality, meaning and fulfilment

– How to use ACT to help you cope with the stresses of difficult clients

This 12-hour course will give an introduction to ACT using a mixture of didactic teaching, experiential learning, reflective discussion and small group work and will take place online. It is suitable for those who have qualified and those who are still in training.
