Course Content:
“We will meet; and there we may rehearse most obscenely and courageously” (Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Act I.)
In their ability to reduce isolation, therapeutic groups can provide members with the vital experience of support and belonging that in and of itself can be transformative. What is more, groups have the potential to provide a unique opportunity for exploring relational dynamics as they unfold in the here and now. This can bring to light a clearer understanding of how one experiences and is experienced by others, providing the necessary ground for developing new ways of ‘being with’. Facilitating groups has therefore always been and continues to be a core feature of psychotherapeutic practice
Moving out of the dyad and into group requires the development of particular skills on behalf of the therapist. This 24-hour course will combine both didactic and experiential teaching methods to deepen participants knowledge, experience and skills in working with groups. Participants will learn about the breadth and types of therapeutic groups, practical considerations for delivering groups and the theoretical principles that underpin their value. Participants learning will be supported by opportunities to experience group membership and group leadership during the course.
