What is mindfulness? What does it involve? How does it differ from other types of meditation practice? How might mindfulness be useful for me? How might mindfulness help my psychological well-being? If you have asked yourself any of these questions, then this course is for you. It is an introductory course for those thinking about pursuing mindfulness studies further.
Mindfulness is an approach that has been developed based on a Buddhist meditative tradition. Whilst it has existed for well over 2000 years, it has gained increasing popularity as a treatment for managing a range of psychological problems (including stress and depression). It has been supported by advances in neuroscientific studies into meditation and its impact on the brain.
This course will introduce mindfulness, what it is and what it is not. It will introduce some of the key practices, along with the everyday nature of mindfulness. It will look at some of the core attitudes for maintaining a mindfulness practice. Finally it will look at some of the research and neuroscientific findings related to mindfulness.
There will be a combination of experiential practices, discussion, and question and answer sessions.
