Designed for qualified counsellors and psychotherapists interested in enhancing their practice. This series applies a relational and systemic lens to the principles of evidence based couples therapy, focusing specifically on relationships and couples where one or both partners have been diagnosed or identify with the ADHD neurotype.
The workshop materials can be applied to individual, couples and relationships and family work.
Understanding Neurodiversity Affirming Care for ADHD
Using a relational and systemic lens, participants will deepen their understanding of ADHD and appreciate the significance of a neuro-affirming approach in therapeutic work with individuals and couples.
Understand Common Therapeutic Themes and Interventions
Participants will learn about evidence based therapeutic themes and interventions gaining insights into common therapeutic issues as well as applied interventions. The presentations will draw from evidence based literature and approaches like Gottman research, Dr. Sue Johnson’s research, attachment and relational science.
Focused Learning Sessions
Participants will engage in three sessions exploring therapeutic themes specifically relevant to couples and navigating ADHD themes, with case studies, role play illustrating practical applications.
Skills Development
Participants will have the opportunity to engage in role-play exercises, case consultations, and an interactive Q&A, aimed at equipping them with effective strategies and insights.
Course Facilitator
Cheryl Leong, LMFT (California)
Cheryl Leong, LMFT, is a California licensed therapist, educator, and ADHD-informed relational specialist working with individuals and couples. Her approach integrates neurodiversity-affirming care, the Gottman Method, attachment theory, and transactional analysis to help clinicians and clients better understand ADHD-related masking, relational impasses, and the impact of executive functioning differences on intimacy, communication, and connection.
She is the co-author of Decentering Neuronormativity: A Transactional Analysis Impasse Theory Perspective for Understanding ADHD Masking and Authentically Honoring the Da Vinci Within (Transactional Analysis Journal, 2024). Cheryl is known for teaching practical, compassionate, and clinically grounded approaches that support ADHDer clients in developing greater authenticity, self-understanding, and healthier relationships.
With more than two decades of experience, Cheryl has worked extensively with ADHD and co-occurring concerns including substance use, trauma, and mood-related challenges. She is a Certified Transactional Analysis Advanced Practitioner through the North American Transactional Analysis Association and an ADHD Certified Clinical Services Provider.
