Foundation Certificate in Transactional Analysis Theory (in person and/or online)

Transactional Analysis Foundation Certificate

The Transactional Analysis Foundation Certificate is both a stand-alone course and the first year for those wanting to progress to our counselling (advanced TA) and psychotherapy training.

Transactional Analysis Training

The Transactional Analysis Foundation Certificate will provide students with in-depth theoretical knowledge of the fundamentals of Transactional Analysis (TA). In addition to being a well established and internationally recognised modality, these TA principles can be applied to benefit a range of areas including personal development, coaching, management, parenting and education.

Teaching will be interactive, with taught elements, case examples, and experiential exercises. Groups will usually be limited to 20 participants.

Introduction to Transactional Analysis

To qualify for this course, applicants are required to complete a TA101 course. This two-day course is an internationally recognised introduction to transactional analysis that is offered both online and in person.

Other Qualifications and Experience criteria: Applicants will need a degree or be able to demonstrate equivalent life and work experience. We aim to be as flexible and inclusive as possible and consider skills developed through parenting, voluntary work, work experience and caring positions when reviewing applications.

Transactional Analysis Courses

Following completion of the TA101 and this foundational year of training, students wishing to work in the counselling and psychotherapy sectors will have the opportunity to progress and achieve further qualifications in TA with our counselling (advanced TA) and psychotherapy training

To Apply: submit a completed application form and attend a 30-minute Zoom interview. We are interviewing for the 2025/26 academic year now.

Sample Content:

  • Week 1. Beginnings
  • Week 2. Who am I?
  • Week 3. The centrality of our relationships
  • Week 4. Options weekend 1
  • Week 5. The story we tell ourselves
  • Week 6. Here we go again
  • Week 7. How must I be seen?
  • Week 8. Options weekend 2
  • Week 9. Reframing reality
  • Week 10. Look how far we’ve come

Assessment: Ongoing learning journal, short questionnaires following each weekend, two essays on aspects of TA (2000 words each).  We would expect students to complete approximately 7 hours of self-study per week (this will vary from student to student and at different times of the academic year).

Personal Therapy: Personal therapy (min 30 sessions per year, or 40 if planning to go on to Psychotherapy) is a requirement for those wanting to continue on to the clinical years. For those who only want to attend this year personal therapy is strongly encouraged to get the best from the course.

Recognition: On completion of this course successful participants will be awarded a Foundation Certificate in TA Theory.

Course Fee: TBC online / TBC in-person. Additional information on associated training costs for 2026-25 (e.g. for therapy, student memberships etc.) will be updated. You can view the training costs for 2025-26 – TLC guide to additional training costs. For those progressing onto further years of training for the Diploma in Counselling and the Psychotherapy qualification, there is an annual course fee for each year of training.

Course Location: We are offering three courses for our next intake (Oct 2026). Two will be delivered at our training rooms in Plumpton, East Sussex and the other will be fully online via Zoom.
